SUMMARY:Talk with Brandy Schillace - Authors with Disabilities and Chronic Illnesses Network Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our next online meet-up on Thursday 22 October from 2pm. \n \nThis month we will be joined by Brandy Schillace (skil-AH-chay) PhD. Brandy is a writer\, historian\, and social justice advocate. Her work covers medical humanities\, creative writing\, disability\, neurodivergence\, and representation. An award-winning novelist and former academic\, Brandy writes and speaks about disability\, visibility\, and inclusion. \nHer last two mystery novels feature neurodivergent characters with hidden disabilities and LGBTQ characters; she has been doing a lot of work discussing what it’s like both to support representation as an author while also living with chronic illness and disability. She leads an initiative called Path to Publication where she served as a developmental editor for disabled and minority authors\, through the BMJ. \nFormerly an editor for Culture\, Medicine and Psychiatry\, a medical anthropology journal and BMJ’s Medical Humanities\, where she focused on disability studies\, Brandy works as a freelance journalist as well as a writer of nonfiction and fiction. Brandy has written about death and dying\, scientific invention\, Cold War medicine\, bioethics\, organ transplant\, and forensics. In Mr. Humble and Dr. Butcher\, she provided an extensive history of brain surgery and neuroscience. Her most recent nonfiction\, The Intermediaries\, tells the forgotten\, daring history of trans activists\, gender affirming surgeries\, and the fight for LGBTQ rights in the shadow of the Third Reich. The book was longlisted for the 2025 National Book Critics Circle Award for Nonfiction\, shortlisted for the Triangle Awards\, and a Kirkus Reviews and Boston Globe Best Book of the Year. In fiction\, Brandy is author of The Framed Women of Ardemore House\, winner of the Royden B. Davis award\, and The Dead Come to Stay\, mystery novels featuring a neurodivergent protagonist. \nBrandy has bylines at WSJ\, Scientific American\, Globe and Mail\, HuffPo\, WIRED\, Boston Globe\, and UNDARK. She is host of Unsolved Mysteries of Medicine (2025) and the popular YouTube livestream and podcast\, Peculiar Book Club\, featuring bestselling authors of unusual nonfiction\, from Lindsey Fitzharris and Mary Roach to Ed Yong and Deborah Blum. It is in its seventh season.  She has appeared on Mysteries at the Museum with Don Wildman\, The Unbelievable with Dan Akroyd\, Secrets Declassified with David Duchovny\, and Histories Greatest Mysteries with Laurence Fishburne. Brandy gives regular keynotes and participates in other speaking events\, and is a tireless advocate for social justice\, disability and LGBTQ+ representation. \nBrandy is a member of the  Writer’s Guild of America\, DC Science Writers Association\, and National Association of Science Writers in the United States. In the UK\, she is a member of the Crime Writers Association\, where she co-convenes the nonfiction chapter\, and the Society of Authors. Brandy is an elected fellow of the Royal Historical Society. In spring of 2026\, Brandy was a visiting scholar to the University of Manchester\, where we gave two talks and a workshop about autism\, disability\, and neurodivergence in conjunction with the Center for History\, Science\, Technology and Medicine and the Autism Center. \nAbout the Authors with Disabilities and Chronic Illnesses Network  \nThe Authors with Disabilities and Chronic Illnesses network is a member-led peer support network aims to break feelings of isolation by connecting authors facing common experiences\, in an online community that offers continuing professional and personal support. \nWe run monthly get-togethers using Zoom\, where you can chat informally online with others. SUMMARY:Gloucestershire Group: Description in fact and fiction
DESCRIPTION:Join our ever-growing\, dynamic Gloucestershire Group on Thursday 22 October from 14:00. \nDescription in fact and fiction \nWhat are the different techniques involved in describing people between fact and fiction? \nAfter the last session\, we concluded that we wanted to discuss some of the differences between description for fiction and description for non-fiction. How much does the reader need to know about how someone looks? What can we say about someone real? Does eye colour\, hair or height make a difference? Does a non-fiction character need description or will a picture do (if we can afford it)? Are there legal implications? Does the length of time since their existence make a difference? \nWe will explore the limits of description\, focussing on character\, real or imagined. How do you help your readers see or get to know your protagonists or characters. \nCome ready to share a few examples of description; bring your own characters or/and some examples of fabulous descriptions or really odd or cliched. \nThe venue has great accessibility: it’s the ground-floor meeting room within the Monastery Café building at Prinknash Abbey\, Cranham\, GL4 8EX. There is a large\, free car park\, above the café building. Walk down steps or a gentle slope to access the café entrance. The meeting room is immediately to your left on entering\, with toilets opposite. The café to the right serves a great selection of non-alcoholic refreshments\, delicious cake etc. \nIf you have accessibility issues\, keep driving: there are two disabled spaces just to the left of the doorway. While the café is generously offering us the meeting room free of charge\, please bring a plastic card or cash to pay for your own refreshments. \nLocal group meet-ups are free to attend. To join us\, click the Going button below and enter your details in the RSVP form so we have an idea of how many people to expect. We are currently experiencing some issues with our RSVP forms. If the RSVP form does not work\, please contact localgroups@societyofauthors.org to register for the meeting.

SUMMARY:CANCELLED - Norfolk & Suffolk Group: Interview with John Shelley
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE NOTE: DUE TO LOW NUMBERS\, THIS EVENT WILL NO LONGER TAKE PLACE. \nJoin the Norfolk & Suffolk Group online on Thursday 22 October from 7pm to hear from illustrator John Shelley. \nBorn in Birmingham to an Anglo-Welsh family\, John Shelley studied at Bournville School of Art\, then in Manchester under children’s illustrator Tony Ross\, before debuting as a book and editorial illustrator in London in the 1980’s. His first trade picture book The Secret in the Matchbox was shortlisted for the Mother Goose Award. A fascination with Japanese art then took him to Tokyo\, where he became a prominent illustrator within the Japanese graphic design industry\, as well as continuing to illustrate children’s books for publishers in Japan and the USA. Aside from illustration\, in Tokyo he was also a fashion model represented by his wife’s agency\, and in his spare time\, enjoyed helping to run events and DJing for several years.  \nAfter 21 years in Japan\, John returned to the UK following the unexpected passing of his wife\, and settled in Norwich to raise his daughter. He now spends his time writing and illustrating\, still largely for overseas clients\, and most recently has begun spinning vinyl again.  \nAs well as award-winning campaigns in the Japanese design industry\, John’s children’s books have received various prizes in the US. With a career illustrating over 60 books for different countries\, he was 5-times nominated for the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award 2018-2022.  \nA former volunteer for the Japan Graphic Designers Association (JAGDA)\, and Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI)\, he’s currently a member of the Society of Authors (SOA) and East Anglian Writers. \nThis event will be online. \nAll members welcome from the surrounding area! \nTo join us\, click the Going button below and enter your details in the RSVP form so we have an idea of how many people are planning to attend.
