Have your say on Arts Council England’s new ten-year strategy

11 October 2018

Arts Council England has launched the latest stage of the consultation on its ten-year strategy for 2020-2030. This follows on from the ‘conversation’ which ACE held with the sector earlier this year. You can read our response to the conversation here.

The consultation document outlines seven proposed outcomes for 2030, reflecting the following key areas:

  1. Supporting a wider range of cultural activities, particularly those which are part of people’s everyday lives.
  2. Ensuring that people from all backgrounds benefit from public investment in culture.
  3. Supporting organisations that consistently identify and nurture creative talent and collections expertise.
  4. Taking action to ensure greater diversity in the creative industries.
  5. Increasing access to culture for children from all backgrounds, both in and out of school.
  6. Enabling cultural organisations to be more collaborative and enterprising, investing more in business innovation.
  7. Ensuring that cultural organisations strengthen their international reputation.

ACE is asking stakeholders to comment on each of these outcomes, asking whether they are the right ones, and if so, how to achieve them.

The SoA will be submitting a response, and it is important that this reflects the views of our members. Please share your thoughts and ideas with us so we can incorporate them into our final submission by emailing tgallagher@societyofauthors.org. You can also make individual submissions if you wish (please mention that you are an SoA member!)

Earlier this year we highlighted the following areas where we believe ACE could offer more support for all genres and types of writers, illustrators, translators, poets and scriptwriters - through grants for works in progress, digital opportunities, skills training, mentoring schemes, funding for prizes, supporting small publishers and producers, supporting authors to make school visits, supporting festivals, and offering greater support to libraries. We are also pleased that so far around 20% of ACE’s new development fund for creative practitioners - Developing Your Creative Practice – has been awarded to literary projects.
