Following the success of the last three retreats at Moniack Mhor, the Society of Authors in Scotland (SoAiS) have organised an additional untutored writing retreat on the Scottish Borders, in the iconic setting of Walter Scott’s home, Abbotsford House across 10 to 15 February 2020.
The Hope Scott Wing at Abbotsford is elegantly appointed 5* en-suite self-catering accommodation, with tea/coffee making facilities in all the bedroom areas and plenty of beautiful communal space. Find out more here
The idea is for uninterrupted writing time, but there will be opportunities to socialise in the evenings and also the possibility of a writing workshop, a talk from one of the Abbotsford staff, and / or a special ‘behind the scenes’ tour of the main house if desired. SoA members have sole use of the wing for the duration, so you will be with like-minded people, and as the main house will be shut to the public during our stay, we will also have exclusive use of the extensive grounds.
Despite its quiet location, Abbotsford is easy to access – only 1 mile from Tweedbank railway station and there is also ample parking on site.
Rooms can be booked for single, double or twin occupancy, priced accordingly. In addition, there is one room with an inter-connecting room, these two could be available together for twin + one occupancy.
As there were several people interested in twin rooms at Moniack this year, but all rooms had already been let as singles, we will initially be holding back a couple of the rooms for twin occupancy. The accommodation is of an exceptionally high standard, with a lift available to all floors and one room has fully accessible bathroom facilities.
All food is included in the price and we can cater for a variety of diets (let us know when booking). Breakfast and lunch will be self-prepared and evening meals will be taken together. We will be using an outside caterer to provide the main course each evening, so there will be less food preparation required of each participant, though they will be expected to help to prepare vegetables or accompaniments and clear up on one evening – no experience is required, as you will work with someone else and clear instructions will be provided.
Single room en-suite: £420 (member) / £450 (non-member) per person
Double / twin room en-suite: £660 (members) / £700 (non-members) per room.
Price for twin + one on request.
For comparison: Arvon untutored retreats range from £648-£684 per person, so Abbotsford provides very good value for money, especially considering the quality of the accommodation.
Booking is open from now until 15 November 2019, but we expect high demand for places so please soon to secure your place! 50% of the cost is due when booking your place on the retreat, with the balance due by 1 December 2019.
How to book
Bookings are open to SoA members in the first instance, and subsequently will be offered to non-members if there are spaces available.
To book your place, email firstname.lastname@example.org with Abbotsford Writing Retreat in the subject line of the email, with your name, phone number, membership number and the type of room you require. In addition, please tell us of any dietary requirements (if none, please state none) and if you have mobility issues.
If you are booking a double / twin room, one person must book for both parties. Please state who you are sharing with and supply ALL details for that person as well as your own, including dietary requirements and any mobility issues.
We will then contact you with instructions as to how to pay the deposit. Once this has reached our bank account, we will confirm your booking and remind you when your balance is due.
Please note: your place is ONLY secure once you have received the second confirmation email that we have your deposit. We cannot reserve rooms without a deposit.
