I am writing the biography of a 16th-century cardinal whose life spans the period from Rome's "Golden Age" under Pope Leo X to the calamitous indecision of Clement VII's reign and the growing demand for spiritual and ecclesiastical reform under the Farnese pope, Paul III.

In particular, the cardinal's life highlights the role played by the exiled Florentine community in Rome and the significance of the female members of his family. In short, his life reflects the transition from Renaissance splendour and magnificence to the demands for greater rigour and asceticism played out against the turbulent and violent politics and culture of the Counter-Reformation.
