Eligibility

We are broadening the eligibility criteria for the Tom Gallon-Trust Award for a single short story published or unpublished. Those who are ordinarily resident in the UK, but not necessarily British citizens, will now be able to enter.

Awards Secretary Paula Johnson welcomes the new eligibility criteria:

It is a matter of great celebration that the Tom-Gallon has been a part of the literary landscape for many decades and we are delighted that we can now open entry to writers from all parts of the world who live and work in the UK.

We are also applying to the Charity Commission to similarly change the criteria for the Betty Trask, Somerset Maugham and the Eric Gregory Awards so that anyone ordinarily resident in the UK can enter. We had hoped that the process would be concluded by now but we have been informed by the Charity Commission that they would like us to hold a public consultation on the proposed changes.

We apologise for erroneously announcing that the criteria for the Eric Gregory had been changed. We are sorry for any confusion caused and hope to be able to make the changes in due course. We welcome feedback and will be opening a consultation shortly, in the meantime please contact us with any comments or questions.
