The national group for writers, illustrators and translators in Northern Ireland

The Society of Authors is the trade union for all types of writers, illustrators and literary translators in Northern Ireland.

Since 2020, our membership in Northern Ireland has more than doubled. From 2023, we have expanded our work on behalf of author communities locally.

Local challenges, national support

Authors in Northern Ireland face many unique challenges, which is why in 2023 we launched a new initiative, led by local author Hilary McCollum, to support and campaign for members here.

‘I’m delighted to be the Society of Authors’ first regional organiser for Northern Ireland. Northern Ireland has a rich literary and storytelling culture but it receives the lowest per head investment in the arts of anywhere in Britain and Ireland. Authors here typically earn less than those in England, Scotland and Wales. As well as acting as a first port of call for Northern Ireland members, I am working to improve the environment within which writers, illustrators and translators operate so that they can develop and enhance their careers.’

In your area

Our local groups in Derry and Belfast host monthly meet-ups for you to connect with writers, illustrators and literary translators. Run by members for members, these groups are a great way to meet fellow authors in your area, share knowledge, support and inspire one another.

Belfast & Beyond meet on the last Saturday of the month from 2pm for coffee in central Belfast.

Derry Group meet on a Saturday afternoon from 3pm for coffee.

Please see the events page to register for upcoming events – all welcome!

We’d like to help more members get together across Northern Ireland for 2024. If you are interested in hosting a local group in your area, please get in touch with  [email protected] and we can help you get started.
